New Campaign for First Black Woman SCOTUS Nominee Launches Today
‘She Will Rise’ pushes to strengthen American democracy amid a national reckoning on race
Washington, DC – Today marks the launch of She Will Rise, the campaign supporting the nomination and confirmation of the first ever Black woman U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The campaign will kick off with a virtual conversation, streamed live on Youtube and Facebook, about our nation’s racist history and the Court’s role in resolving the fundamental challenges keeping racism alive today. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and founder of the 1619 Project, Nikole Hannah-Jones; and renowned author and activist, Donna Hylton will be among featured speakers at today’s launch event.
The event can be accessed here.
She Will Rise seeks to foster greater equality in America by ensuring the nomination of a Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States for the first time since it was established over 230 years ago. One of the campaign’s primary goals is to educate all Americans on the importance of the Supreme Court’s role, and the role of its justices, in moving our nation forward.
“From ending police violence and racial profiling to advocating for healthcare access, Black women have shown up at the polls, at protests, and in our community,” said Kim Tignor, one of the campaign’s leaders and a senior advisor to Demand Justice. “Appointing a Black woman to the Supreme Court is the next and necessary step towards a truer form of democracy and ensuring that our unique experiences and perspectives are represented in the Court’s deliberative process.”
The U.S. Supreme Court has consistently underestimated the consequences of its decisions on marginalized communities. The Court stepped in, throughout the pandemic, to prevent states from taking common-sense steps to enable people to vote safely, forcing Americans to choose between their health and exercising their right to vote. The Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, which disproportionately impacted Black voters and voters who live at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities. A Black woman’s perspective can help avoid these fundamental mistakes and strengthen democracy in America.
She Will Rise is a non-partisan partnership supported by Demand Justice, the Institute of Intellectual Property & Social Justice (IIPSJ), The Raben Group, and ReignStorm Ventures.
