Washington, DC– The Senate Judiciary Committee today held a hearing entitled “When the President Does It, that Means It’s Not Illegal’: The Supreme Court’s Unprecedented Immunity Decision.” The hearing was a response to the Supreme Court’s disastrous ruling in Trump v. US, which gives broad legal protections to disgraced former President Donald Trump, including immunity for his official actions as President.

In response to the hearing, Demand Justice Managing Director Maggie Jo Buchanan said the following:

“At today’s hearing, Republicans worked hard to smear genuine concern over the Court’s immunity ruling as an effort to ‘delegitimize’ the Court. Even with legal experts present to highlight the real danger that this ruling poses to American democracy and the future of our country, committee Republicans engaged in a shameful attempt to defend this absurd and extremist ruling.

“No one in our country, not members of Congress, not Supreme Court justices, not even the president, are above the rule of law. This is a core tenant of our Constitution, one that must be protected at all costs.”

Recent polling from Navigator Research makes clear that an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that former presidents should not be above the law. In fact, the polling shows that 78% of Americans agree that “no one is above the law, including a former president” while only 22% agree that “former presidents should be immune from criminal prosecutions, in most cases.” With decisions like Trump v. US, it’s no wonder that Americans trust in the Supreme Court is reaching an all time low.

It’s incumbent upon Congress to keep shining a light on the disastrous rulings that this Supreme Court is handing down, which threaten to undermine our democracy and our constitutional order.
