DEMAND JUSTICE PRAISES WASHINGTON STATE SENATORS FOR JUDICIAL NOMINEES

WASHINGTON, DC — Following news that President Biden will nominate David Estudillo and Tana Lin to District Court judgeships in Washington, Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon released the following statement:

“Washington’s senators deserve major credit for taking President Biden’s guidance to heart and suggesting such terrific nominees. By reforming their judicial screening committee to include more public interest lawyers and following through with these two picks, Senators Murray and Cantwell have set an example for the rest of the Senate Democratic caucus to follow.”

On Thursday, Biden announced he will nominate David Estudillo and Tana Lin to the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. Estudillo and Lin will bring badly needed professional diversity to a federal court system dominated by corporate lawyers and prosecutors.

In 2020, the Biden administration sent a letter to Senate Democrats asking them to prioritize public defenders, civil rights lawyers, and legal aid lawyers in their recommendations for the district court judgeships. Research shows that former corporate lawyers and prosecutors are overrepresented on the federal bench, and that those types of lawyers are more likely to rule against workers when they become judges.

Previously, Demand Justice praised Sen. Murray’s announcement that she had reconstituted her judicial screening committee with public interest lawyers.
