Supreme Court Ends Another Devastating Term By Aiding Trump’s Abuse Of Power

WASHINGTON, DC— On Friday, the very last day of its term, the Supreme Court handed down a seismic ruling effectively eliminating the ability of lower courts to defend Americans from attacks on our rights by the Trump administration. The same six MAGA justices who ruled to give Trump immunity from criminal prosecution for “official” acts, have now further aided the far-right’s efforts to make Trump a King. 

The MAGA justices on the Court, including Trump’s three appointees, have taken countless opportunities to defend his lawless agenda, even using the shadow docket to allow the administration to deport immigrants to countries to which they have no ties. The day before the term ended, these same justices cleared the way for states to block access to Planned Parenthood’s entire range of healthcare services for Medicaid recipients. And earlier in the term, the Court allowed states to ban access to lifesaving gender affirming care for transgender youth. 

In response to the end of the Supreme Court term, Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement: 

“The American people deserve a Supreme Court that works for them–that means justices who stand up to abuses of power by the executive branch and protect the rights of everyday people. That is far from the Court we have today, which has emboldened the administration’s abuses of power while decimating the rights of immigrants, people seeking reproductive care, and the environment. 

“Overall, the Court has cleared the path for more lawlessness from the Trump administration and more pain for people across the country. 

“Aided by his allies in Congress and his six friends on the Supreme Court, Donald Trump continues to distort the balance of powers in our government to a dangerous degree. The rule of law, equal justice for all, and due process are all at risk without a judiciary that will check an out of control President.”
