Washington, D.C.– “Last night the Supreme Court once again twisted the law to give Republicans more power, allowing lawmakers in New York to hit pause on a fairer congressional map in their state. This decision follows a pattern: blatant and hypocritical power grabs, dressed up as legal arguments.
“Absurdly, Justice Alito called New York’s effort to protect minority voters ‘racial discrimination,’ turning the Constitution on its head to shield a Republican gerrymander. As Justice Sotomayor makes clear, this Court blew past its own rules to meddle in a state law dispute, without even letting New York’s highest court weigh in. This Supreme Court has lost the faith of the people because of this kind of blatant partisanship. It desperately needs reform.”
