Washington, DC – Today in oral arguments, the Supreme Court’s extreme, hyper-partisan majority made clear that they intend to decimate what is left of the Voting Rights Act in order to help Republicans win more elections. As Justice Kagan said today during oral arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, the state’s arguments in this case have been rejected time and time again by the Supreme Court, both “over many decades and three years ago.”
In response, Demand Justice President Josh Orton released the following statement:
“A Supreme Court that has repeatedly handed Donald Trump power to carry out his extreme agenda now appears ready to hand him even more power — by functionally ending the Voting Rights Act and helping Republicans lock in electoral advantages for years to come. Make no mistake: the hyper-partisan justices on the Court are fine making it harder for people of color to have a voice in our democracy, so long as Republicans benefit at the ballot box. The Supreme Court must be reformed.”
