Washington, DC – Today, the Senate voted to advance Third Circuit nominee Emil Bove III, Trump’s former personal attorney who faces alarming allegations from his time at the U.S. Department of Justice and has been widely opposed by former judges, prosecutors, and the general public as unfit to serve.

In addition, new reporting also released today revealed that Senator Angus King (I-ME)–who has a record of being a strong advocate of reproductive rights–admitted that his vote to confirm Trump judicial nominee Joshua Divine earlier this week was “a mistake”, and he did not work to inform himself on Divine’s extreme record, particularly on abortion rights, before voting for him.

In response, Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement

“Emil Bove will be a stain on the judiciary if confirmed. And the Divine debacle points to the dangerous truth that far too many Senators are failing to take seriously the consequences inherent in giving Trump more influence over the judiciary.

“Voting to confirm Trump’s judicial nominees to lifetime seats on the federal bench, as he wages a war on the very idea of judicial independence, is an unacceptable choice for any Senator who believes in our democracy and the importance of individual rights. Trump and his MAGA allies are helping him consolidate power in the executive branch, attacking judges who dare to rule against his interests, and targeting Trump’s perceived political enemies—all while seemingly unconcerned about the future this sets up for our nation.

“Every Senator will have to decide where they stand when it comes to this assault on our country’s values–and that choice will not be forgotten.”
