Washington, DC– Today Demand Justice released the second brief in a new series, The State of Our Courts, which focuses on the makeup of the lower courts while calling on lawmakers to prioritize judicial confirmations through the remainder of 2024.
The second brief, which can be found here, calls attention to the need to prioritize nominations as well as for reforms to the lower courts and the judicial nominations process, including the creation of new district and circuit court judgeships and reform of the blue slip process to prevent political blockades of qualified nominees.
The brief notes:
“The Biden administration and Senate have made impressive progress on nominations and must continue to prioritize appointing qualified, fair-minded judges who represent a range of professional and life experience.”
The brief goes on to explain,
“The current judiciary is overworked, with significant backlogs that delay the administration of justice, meaning ordinary people must often wait years for their day in court…[u]nfilled vacancies only worsen this problem.”
