Trump’s lower court nominees have been extreme, with a proven history of loyalty to him or his MAGA agenda. Will his Supreme Court pick also fit this dangerous mold?
Trump’s three SCOTUS picks – Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett – have helped the Court overturn Roe v. Wade, give presidents, namely Trump, immunity from criminal prosecution for “official acts”, and made it harder to protect our communities from gun violence.
Make no mistake: this choice will matter for generations to come. This new justice will sit on our nation’s highest court long after Trump leaves office. How they approach the law, and whether loyalties lie with Trump or with the American people, matters deeply. We deserve a Supreme Court that works for all of us.
What comes next:
Now that there is a vacancy on the Supreme Court, the President will have the opportunity to appoint a new justice to the Court. Here’s what comes next:
- President Trump announces his nominee to the Supreme Court
- The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a multi-day hearing, featuring expert witnesses, to examine the nominee’s qualifications and approach to the law.
- The 22 Committee members will vote to move the nomination out of the committee and onto the Senate floor.
- The full Senate will engage in debate about the nominee. To end debate, a majority of Senators (at least 51) must agree in a cloture vote.
- The full Senate will vote on the confirmation of the nominee. If a majority of Senators (at least 51) vote in favor of confirmation, the nominee will be confirmed to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court.
