Washington, DC– On Friday, the Supreme Court granted a Trump administration request to revoke the humanitarian legal status of over half a million migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela while legal challenges continue in the courts. Justices Jackson and Sotomayor wrote a dissent to the Court’s order.
In response, Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:
“As Justices Jackson and Sotomayor said in their dissent, this ruling allows the government to do as they please regardless of the consequences, and ‘unleash[es] devastation’ upon half a million people. Allowing Trump to go through with this kind of cruelty, even temporarily, puts a stain on our democracy and on our nation’s highest court.
“With people across our country fearing for their rights and safety, the justices must stop contributing to this chaos by emboldening Trump’s dangerous agenda.”
