Washington, DC– On Monday, Senator Adam Schiff and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin led a bicameral spotlight hearing on the attacks by President Trump and his allies against lawyers, law firms and the courts. Democratic members of both chambers of Congress attended the hearing.
As Senator Schiff said during the hearing, “Donald Trump is taking unprecedented steps to bend our justice system to his will, and his administration is moving systematically and swiftly to dismantle the legal pillars that hold up our democracy… We will do the investigative work that our colleagues across the aisle refuse to do. We will expose the illegality, abuse and corruption of this administration and within the Department of Justice. ”
Representative Raskin also noted that, “The President issues executive orders banning disfavored lawyers and law firms from federal buildings… unless they offer him blind loyalty and millions of dollars in free pro-bono services for his pro-malum causes, and the Republicans say nothing… They’re not making America great again, but they’re definitely making the government corrupt again.”
Following the hearing, Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:
“This hearing exposed the coordinated campaign being waged by the Trump administration and their far-right, extremist allies to intimidate lawyers, corrupt federal courts, and transform our justice system into a political weapon serving their interests. We must defend the principles and values of this nation, and be clear that we see through this attempted MAGA distortion of the rule of law and our Constitution. Trump cannot be allowed to trample over our legal institutions and escape accountability–no branch of government should be allowed to run wild without checks and balances from the other two.”
