Progressives Plan Protest at Supreme Court Following Trump’s Attacks on Sotomayor, Ginsburg
WASHINGTON, DC—On Monday, March 2nd at 1pm, progressives will gather on the steps of the Supreme Court for a demonstration in solidarity with Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, following Donald Trump’s attacks on their impartiality.
The announcement follows Sotomayor’s stunning dissent warning of the Court’s increasing deference to the Trump administration. Writing in opposition to a 5-4 decision in which the Court’s Republican majority allowed the Trump administration to implement a wealth test for immigrants before it had been fully reviewed by lower courts, she wrote, “perhaps most troublingly, the Court’s recent behavior on stay applications has benefited one litigant over all others.”
On Monday night, Trump tweeted an attack on Sotomayor and Ginsburg, calling on them both to recuse themselves in “Trump related matters,” and he continued his baseless charge in a press conference Tuesday.
“Trump’s latest outburst is a stark reminder that he thinks the Supreme Court should work for him, not uphold the rule of law,” said Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang. “While the Republicans on the Court have pledged allegiance to the Trump agenda, Justices Sotomayor and Ginsburg continue to stand up against his abuse of power. We’re protesting on the steps of the Supreme Court to show Trump and the Republican justices that when Sotomayor and Ginsburg resist his power-grabs, Americans have their backs.”
