Seven More Progressive Groups Join “Whip The Vote” To Push Democratic Senators To Unite Against Brett Kavanaugh

WASHINGTON, DC—Seven new organizations – Caring Across Generations, Health Care Voter, End Citizens United, National LGBTQ Action Fund, Stand Up America, United We Dream and #VOTEPROCHOICE – announced Wednesday they will join the #WhipTheVote campaign to demand that every Democratic senator announce their opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation immediately.

The groups join Demand Justice, Indivisible, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Color of Change, CREDO, Daily Kos, Democracy for America, PCCC, and Ultraviolet as partners in the #WhipTheVote campaign. Launched on Monday, WhipTheVote.org tracks each senator’s position on Kavanaugh’s confirmation and gives their constituents the tools they need to contact their offices.

Yesterday, Senate Democrats surrendered to Senate Republicans on 15 more of Trump’s lower-court nominees, fast-tracking his scheme to pack the courts with conservative judges. With the Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled to start Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing in less than a week—completely ignoring the fact that Trump was just implicated in multiple federal crimes and that Kavanaugh believes that presidents ought to be above the lawDemocrats should be fighting harder, not allowing more concessions. Stunningly, however, twenty-three Democratic senators have refused to publicly state their clear opposition to Kavanaugh.

“Mitch McConnell is in the middle of stealing the federal courts for conservatives, and Democrats continue to bring a butter knife to a gunfight,” said Brian Fallon, founder of Demand Justice. “Democrats should be resisting Trump’s judge picks at every turn, not agreeing to fast-track them, as happened this week. It is hard to think of a more pathetic surrender heading into the Kavanaugh hearings.”

“The time to act is now. Judge Kavanaugh is a threat to the rights and well-being of millions of Americans. He will further rig the system in favor of corporate special interests and mega-donors with radical agendas. Everyday Americans will pay the price,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “Judge Kavanaugh will allow special interests to spend more money in politics to chip away at our rights, starting with our access to health care and freedom to choose. Every Senator who opposes that extreme agenda should voice their dissent to Kavanaugh today.”

“Voters understand that Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination is a threat to the 130 million Americans who live with a pre-existing condition,” said Health Care Voter spokesperson Mikka Macdonald. “Now, we need Senators to listen to their voices, defend their health care, and reject Brett Kavanaugh.”

“The National LGBTQ Task Force opposes the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh because we know that the LGBTQ community, people of color, people living with HIV, immigrants, those seeking abortion services, workers and any other communities at risk under the current Trump Administration will be even more threatened if Trump’s buddy is confirmed to a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land,” Candace Bond-Theriault, Senior Policy Counsel, Reproductive Health, Rights & Justice and Democracy Project Director at the National LGBTQ Task Force. “We are striving to create a world where people can be themselves, love openly and partner with whomever they want to without discrimination or oppressive governmental punishment. We will do everything that we can to ensure that Brett Kavanaugh is not seated on the bench.”

“Let’s not sugarcoat it: a president under criminal investigation has nominated a judge to the Supreme Court who could put him above the law. That’s unacceptable. Our grassroots community has made over 10,000 calls to their senators to oppose Kavanaugh’s confirmation — and we’re just getting started,” said Sean Eldridge, founder and president of Stand Up America. “What our senators do next will impact America for generations to come. It’s time for them to stand up and oppose Kavanaugh’s confirmation.”
