NEW DEMAND JUSTICE AD URGES SEN. COONS TO STOP CONFIRMING JUDGES WHO WON’T SUPPORT BROWN
Activists Arrested Protesting Coons’ Continued Support for Trump’s Picks Who Have Refused to Say Brown v. Board of Education was Correctly Decided
WASHINGTON, DC—Demand Justice announced a new digital ad on Tuesday urging Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) to stop voting for Trump’s judicial nominees who have refused to say that Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that declared school segregation unconstitutional, was correctly decided.
Today’s ad announcement coincides with a day of action by Demand Justice and the Center for Popular Democracy Action, in which activists are protesting several Senators who have backed nominees who will not support Brown. This afternoon, three activists were arrested at Sen. Coons’ office, chanting “We won’t back down on Brown.”
“This has to be the bottom line for opposing Trump’s judges,” said Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang. “Senator Coons can’t have it both ways, professing support for civil rights and then turning around and voting for a majority of the judicial nominees who cannot say Brown, a civil rights cornerstone, was correctly decided.”
Senator Coons has supported 18 judicial nominees who have refused to affirm Brown, either in Judiciary Committee votes or on the Senate floor. This includes all 10 of the nominees who refused to affirm Brown and are still awaiting final confirmation votes. There is no reason for a judicial nominee to equivocate on this question, which has been answered by John Roberts, Neil Gorsuch, and dozens of Trump nominees, and there is no excuse for a Senator to vote for a nominee who gives less than a clear, affirmative answer.
A sample of the ad appears below.
