NEW DEMAND JUSTICE AD: SENATOR COLLINS IS PLAYING POLITICAL GAMES WITH MAINE WOMEN
New Maine Ad Calls Out Collins’ Willingness to Vote for Supreme Court Pick Kavanaugh Despite His Anti-Abortion Record
WASHINGTON, DC—On Friday, Demand Justice released a new TV and digital ad targeting Senator Susan Collins for claiming to support abortion rights even as she leans in favor of supporting President Trump’s anti-choice Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.
The 30-second spot contrasts Collins’ stated refusal to vote for any Supreme Court nominee who opposes Roe v. Wade with her current indication that she may, in fact, support Kavanaugh despite his anti-Roe record.
The ad focuses on a 2017 speech in which Kavanaugh suggested that Roe was wrongly decided. In that speech, Kavanaugh praised the late Justice William Rehnquist, who wrote the dissenting opinion in Roe v. Wade and whom Kavanaugh acknowledges “clearly wanted to overturn Roe,” as his “hero.”
The spot urges viewers to tell Collins that she is not fooling anyone by neglecting to acknowledge Kavanaugh’s hostility to Roe.
The ad will run on broadcast and cable in both the Portland and Bangor markets. A transcript of the ad appears below.
TRANSCRIPT OF “HERO”
VOICEOVER: Susan Collins is playing political games with Maine women. First, she promised to vote against any Supreme Court nominee who opposed Roe. Now she says she might vote for Trump’s pick, Brett Kavanaugh.
But his anti-abortion record is clear. Kavanaugh suggested Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. And called a judge who fought against the Roe decision his “hero.”
CLIP OF BRETT KAVANAUGH: “He clearly wanted to overrule Roe.”
“He was the guy who I agreed with on all sorts of different cases. … My first judicial hero.”
VOICEOVER: Tell Susan Collins we’re not fooled. A vote for Kavanaugh is a vote to overturn Roe.
