Washington, DC–Today marked the start of a new Supreme Court term, with an extremist Court that is unaccountable to the public poised to hear a number of critical cases and likely to weigh in on petitions related to the 2024 election. In response to the new term, Demand Justice Managing Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:
“It would be a mistake to treat the start of term as anything resembling a normal part of our democracy. Because while the justices were out on their summer breaks — which, if history is any guide, likely included billionaire funded trips that we’ll only learn about years from now — the scandals kept coming. This court continues to be badly in need of reform in order to ensure it serves the American people over extremist interests.”
Last term, bombshell reporting found that two January 6th associated flags had flown outside Justice Alito’s homes. But while the Court was out of session, news continued to break on a number of new ethics scandals from the justices:
- Justice Thomas failed to report even more private jet travel provided by Harlan Crow, this time between New Zealand and Hawaii in 2010.
- Chief Justice John Roberts allegedly went to great–and sometimes unusual–lengths to produce outcomes in cases that benefited Donald Trump.
- New emails from Ginni Thomas to the head of the First Liberty Institute show her praising the organization’s opposition to Supreme Court reforms, saying “YOU GUYS HAVE FILLED THE SAILS OF MANY JUDGES.”
