NEW REPORT REVEALS BARRETT SIGNED AD CALLING FOR END TO ‘BARBARIC LEGACY OF ROE V. WADE’

The ad, which was not disclosed to the Senate, was sponsored by an organization that supports criminalizing abortion providers and common IVF practices.

WASHINGTON, DC— In a new development that could make Republicans’ push to confirm Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett before the election even more unpopular, it was revealed Thursday that Barrett once signed an ad that called for “an end to the barbaric legacy of Roe v. Wade.” The ad was sponsored by an extreme anti-choice organization that also supports prosecuting abortion providers and criminalizing common parts of the IVF process.

The ad reads, in part: “ It’s time to put an end to the barbaric legacy of Roe v. Wade and restore laws that protect the lives of unborn children.

This is the clearest expression to date of Barrett’s position on what should happen to Roe. It completely disrupts attempts by Republicans in recent days to pretend her views on the matter are unclear.

Barrett did not disclose the ad in either of her two questionnaires provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The questionnaires can be found here and here.

The Guardian previously reported that the leader of the organization that sponsored the ad, St. Joseph County Right to Life, said: “We support the criminalization of the doctors who perform abortions. […] we would be supportive of criminalizing the discarding of frozen embryos or selective reduction through the IVF process.” The Guardian notes that this is “a view that is considered to be extreme even within the anti-abortion movement.”

The ad appeared in 2006 in the South Bend Tribune to mark the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.

A copy of the two-page ad appears below.
