WITH SENATE PANEL SET TO APPROVE JUDICIAL ETHICS BILL…

NEW POLL: AMERICANS OVERWHELMINGLY LESS LIKELY TO SUPPORT LAWMAKERS WHO OPPOSE SUPREME COURT ETHICS REFORM

Survey Shows Democrats Stand to Gain By Forcing GOP to Vote on Bill Even if It Lacks Votes to Pass

WASHINGTON, DC— With Republicans signaling they plan to oppose a Supreme Court ethics reform proposal set to be marked up by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, a new poll shows nearly 60% of Americans are less likely to support a member of Congress who opposes Court ethics reform.

The poll, conducted by YouGov on behalf of Demand Justice, shows that 59% of Americans say they are less likely to support a candidate who opposes ethics reform, while only 23% of Americans say they are more likely to do so.

“Defending blatant corruption is always a losing proposition in politics, and Republicans have backed themselves into a corner by opposing ethics reform in order to give cover to the likes of Clarence Thomas,” said Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon. “Senate Democrats should feel confident in bringing this bill to the floor of the full Senate even if it may lack the votes. Passing the bill would obviously be ideal, but short of that, exposing the Republicans on this issue is a surefire political winner for Democrats.”

The national survey of 1,011 voters was conducted from July 14–18 of 2023.
