MAGA SCOTUS Justices Effectively Eliminate Ability Of Federal Courts To Defend Americans From Trump’s Attacks On Our Rights

Washington, DC – On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to effectively eliminate the authority of federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions, allowing the Trump administration to violate the Constitution while leaving people across the country little recourse.
As Justice Jackson says in her dissent, “The Court’s decision to permit the Executive to violate the Constitution with respect to anyone who has not yet sued is an existential threat to the rule of law.”
In response to this ruling, Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:
“The same six justices who gave Trump king-like immunity for criminal acts have now limited the ability of the judicial branch to protect everyday Americans from unconstitutional or illegal executive overreach.
“This ruling marks a dark day for our democracy–across the ideological spectrum, the American people do not want courts to cater to Trump. Rather they want, as is crucial to our democracy, an independent judiciary.
“And yet, just as Republican leaders in Congress duck their heads and carry out Trump’s bidding, the Republican appointees on the Court do so as well. This ruling is effectively a blank check for the Trump administration to engage in whatever lawless powergrabbing they desire.
“As Justice Jackson wrote in her dissent, the Court has created an ‘existential threat’ to the rule of law and the system of checks and balances upon which our nation was founded. The American people deserve a Supreme Court that is independent, and willing to halt the gross abuses of power we are seeing from the Trump administration. Our freedoms and our futures depend on it.”
