Washington, DC–In advance of today’s inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States, Demand Justice Managing Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:
“During his first term, Donald Trump stacked the bench with extremists and partisan actors who continued to enact his unpopular policies and personal interests even after he left office. These judges sit on courts at every level across the country and have acted to endanger civil rights, access to reproductive care, and our ability to fight climate change and gun violence.
“In the next four years, we expect even more radical judicial nominees from the Trump administration who are going to skew the balance and fairness of the judiciary. Our country deserves better.
“We are clear-eyed on the fights ahead–and we are ready to stand up for our neighbors and loved ones and demand courts that protect the rights of everyday people, not dismantle them.”
During his first term, Donald Trump appointed over a fourth of all federal judges who are active today. Only 24% of his 234 judges were women, and only 16% were people of color.
