DEMAND JUSTICE VOLUNTEERS FAN OUT ACROSS CAPITOL HILL FOR FIRST-EVER ‘EXPAND THE COURT’ LOBBY DAY

In meeting with activists, Rep. Judy Chu announces support for Judiciary Act for first time

WASHINGTON, DC— On Wednesday, volunteers from 27 states, organized by Demand Justice and MoveOn, fanned out across Capitol Hill as part of Demand Justice’s first-ever lobby day on behalf of Supreme Court expansion.

Volunteers came from as far as Alaska to press for passage of the Judiciary Act of 2021 to add four seats to the Supreme Court. Throughout the day, they presented Members of Congress and staff with a petition signed by 75,000 Americans calling for Supreme Court expansion.

Participants met with lawmakers and staff from four-dozen Hill offices, making the case for the Judiciary Act to members who have yet to sign on and presenting “thank you” cards to many of the bill’s sponsors and cosponsors. The group heard in-person from both Senate supporters of the bill, Sens. Ed Markey and Tina Smith, as well as House champions, including lead sponsors Reps. Hank Johnson and Mondaire Jones, and cosponsors Reps. Cori Bush, Veronica Escobar, Chuy García, Sheila Jackson Lee, Marie Newman, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Jan Schakowsky, and Rashida Tlaib.

Representative Judy Chu, the lead sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act that would make access to abortion care a federally protected right and Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, joined the group to announce for the first time that she would be supporting the Judiciary Act.

The group ended the day in front of the White House unfurling a banner reading #ExpandTheCourt.
