DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT REGARDING SENATE REPUBLICANS’ HYPOCRITICAL LETTER TO SUPREME COURT ON JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE

WASHINGTON, DC—Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang released the following statement Thursday in response to a letter from Senate Republicans to the Supreme Court purporting to defend the independence of the judiciary after they have so thoroughly politicized it:

“Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have gone from hypocritical to gaslighting, professing their support for judicial independence and nine justices on the Supreme Court after stealing a seat from President Obama and holding the Court to eight seats for more than a year.

The Republican assault on our judiciary extends throughout the nation–from Arizona Republicans adding two seats to their Supreme Court to Iowa Republicans rigging the selection process for their Supreme Court justices and appellate judges. Senate Republicans have been conspicuously silent until now, as Senator Whitehouse has called out what we know to be true: the Supreme Court is an increasingly partisan body and we will not accept the status quo.

Senate Republicans promised: ‘While we remain Members of this body, the Democrats’ threat to restructure the Court is an empty one.’ We agree. It’s time to hold these Senators accountable for their extreme, right-wing takeover of our courts.”
