Demand Justice Statement on Trump Nomination of Unqualified McConnell Crony to Nation’s Second Highest Court

Progressive Group Renews Call for Investigation into McConnell’s Role in Forcing Retirement that Created this Vacancy

WASHINGTON, DC—Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang released the following statement Friday in response to the nomination of Justin Walker, a 37-year-old friend of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and former clerk to Brett Kavanaugh, to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals:

“The nomination of a Mitch McConnell crony, who has been rated unqualified by his peers, to the second highest court in the country is beyond suspicious. We need an immediate investigation into whether McConnell manufactured this vacancy by unethically pressuring Judge Thomas Griffith to retire now. We need to know if McConnell contacted Griffith directly, as reports suggest he may have, and if so, what he offered in exchange for his retirement.”

Demand Justice had previously called for an investigation into the vacancy, sending a letter to the Chief Judge of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals urging him to look into the circumstances surrounding Judge Griffith’s retirement.
