DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT EFFECTIVELY OVERTURNING ROE BY LETTING TEXAS ABORTION BAN GO FORWARD

WASHINGTON, DC— Following news that the Supreme Court has allowed a Texas abortion ban to go into effect, Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon issued the following statement:

“Failing to stop the Texas abortion law effectively overturns Roe v. Wade and is the most brazenly lawless action yet from the 6-3 Republican supermajority on the Court. Regardless of whether the Court eventually acts, this law going into effect at all is a direct attack on the constitutional right to an abortion, and the Court’s cavalier assault sends an ominous message, as  it is set to hear another major abortion rights case this term.”

“It should be obvious by now that the Republican justices are prepared to trample on basic legal principles when it suits their partisan agenda. The only comprehensive response to this situation is to expand the Supreme Court. It is time for Democratic leaders in Congress to support the Judiciary Act of 2021.”
