WASHINGTON, DC— Following the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday allowing a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Texas’s anti-abortion law to move forward, Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang released the following statement:

“While this decision offers a momentary relief, the reality is that pregnant people in Texas have been denied their constitutional right to an abortion for more 100 days now and the Court again has done nothing to stop it.

Democrats who support reproductive rights need to see the Republican justices’ writing on the wall and stop standing idly by as Roe v. Wade slowly but surely falls. Just last week, in the Mississippi case, Republican justices made clear that Roe’s days are numbered. Anyone who cares about the bodily autonomy of pregnant people in the country – and about the legitimacy of our judiciary – must support Supreme Court expansion.

President Biden’s Supreme Court commission has finished its work, so there are no more excuses for delay. Several commissioners already have declared their support for expansion – with more surely to follow – underscoring the urgency to expand the Supreme Court to restore balance and protect our democracy.”
