DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON SCHUMER RECOMMENDING VOTING RIGHTS LAWYERS FOR FEDERAL JUDGESHIPS

WASHINGTON, DC— In response to a report that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is recommending two prominent voting rights lawyers for federal judgeships based in New York, Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon issued the following statement:

“There could not be a more fitting moment to elevate two of the nation’s top voting rights lawyers to the federal bench. With his recommendations to the Biden administration so far, Chuck Schumer is showing a truly impressive commitment to diversifying the ranks of federal judges. He is setting the standard for the rest of the Senate Democrats to follow in terms of promoting underrepresented public defenders and civil rights lawyers to the bench.”

On Monday, the Associated Press reported that Schumer has recommended Myrna Perez, director of voting rights and election programs at NYU’s Brennan Center for Justice, for an appeals court position and Dale Ho, head of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, for a district court judgeship.
