DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF CHARLOTTE SWEENEY
WASHINGTON, DC— Demand Justice praised President Biden’s nomination of plaintiff’s lawyer Charlotte Sweeney to the United States District Court for the District of Colorado on Thursday.
Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang said:
“Charlotte Sweeney is exactly the kind of lawyer we need to rebalance a federal court system dominated by former corporate lawyers and prosecutors. Her experience representing workers in a system stacked in favor of employers gives her a valuable perspective that will benefit the entire court.”
After Sens. Bennet and Hickenlooper recommended a former corporate law partner to another judgeship earlier this year, Demand Justice began a campaign to build public support for more professionally diverse judicial nominees in Colorado. Volunteers with Demand Justice met with staff from the senators’ offices, and the organization launched an advertising campaign.
Following the campaign, Sens. Bennet and Hickenlooper announced a new advisory committee that included more professionally diverse lawyers compared to Sen. Bennet’s previous committee, which had the highest percentage of corporate lawyers and prosecutors among Democratic senators with public committees. Sens. Bennet and Hickenlooper then recommended Charlotte Sweeney as one of three potential candidates for the Biden administration to consider.
