DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON NEW BIDEN JUDICIAL NOMINEES

WASHINGTON, DC—Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang released the following statement in response to news that the Biden administration has selected nominees for five federal judgeships, including lawyers with experience as civil rights champions and public defenders:

“With these nominees, President Biden continues to deliver on his promise to rebalance a court system with too few judges who spent their careers representing everyday Americans. This slate of nominees especially underscores the administration’s commitment to elevating civil rights lawyers. Myrna Pérez and Jia Cobb will bring combined decades of civil rights experience to a federal bench with startlingly few judges who share that background. Given that our democracy is under attack from all sides, it is especially fitting that Pérez will bring her experience as one of the country’s foremost voting rights experts to the bench.”

The Associated Press previously reported that Myrna Pérez, who leads the voting rights and election program at NYU’s Brennan Center for Justice, was recommended by Sen. Chuck Schumer to serve on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.
