DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON MONDAIRE JONES AND JAMAAL BOWMAN

Bowman and Jones both have been outspoken advocates for adding seats to reform the Supreme Court.

WASHINGTON, DC— On Wednesday, Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon released the following statement regarding Mondaire Jones and Jamaal Bowman, both of whom have publicly supported adding seats to the Supreme Court:

“There is true momentum behind the movement to add seats to the Supreme Court. Jamaal Bowman and Mondaire Jones are part of a new generation of progressive leaders who understand that we need to fight back aggressively against Donald Trump’s assault on our democracy. It is time for more Democrats in the House and Senate to hear this message from the grassroots and get behind this urgent proposal.”

In April, Mondaire Jones wrote an op-ed titled To save our democracy, we must expand the Supreme Court. Following the Supreme Court’s decision that invalidated Wisconsin absentee ballots in the middle of a pandemic, Bowman tweeted that “we must expand and reform the Supreme Court.”

During the Democratic presidential primary, Pete Buttigeig and Tom Steyer campaigned on plans to add seats to the Court and other candidates, including Sens. Warren, Harris, Klobuchar, and Booker expressed openness to adding seats. A coalition of progressive organizations including Justice Democrats, March For Our Lives Action Fund, the Sunrise Movement, and United We Dream Action recently announced their support for adding seats.
