DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON INTRODUCTION OF BILL TO EXPAND THE SUPREME COURT
Demand Justice will host an organizing call featuring Sen. Markey and Rep. Jones on April 17th to build support for the bill.
WASHINGTON, DC—Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon released the following statement in response to news that House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler, House Judiciary Courts Subcommittee Chair Hank Johnson, House Judiciary Courts Subcommittee Vice Chair Mondaire Jones, and Senator Ed Markey will introduce a bill to add four seats to the Supreme Court:
“This bill marks a new era where Democrats finally stop conceding the Supreme Court to Republicans. Progressives understand we cannot afford to wait six months for an academic study to tell us what we already know: the Supreme Court is broken and in need of reform. Our task now is to build a grassroots movement that puts pressure on every Democrat in Congress to support this legislation because it is the only way to restore balance to the Court and protect our democracy.”
Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang will speak at an 11:30AM Thursday press conference on the steps of the Supreme Court alongside the bill’s cosponsors.
On April 17th at 3:00 PM (ET), Demand Justice will host an organizing call featuring Sen. Markey and Rep. Jones and co-sponsored by Black Lives Matter Global Network, Indivisible, and Sunrise Movement.
