DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON FORMATION OF BIDEN COURT REFORM COMMISSION

WASHINGTON, DC— In response to the Biden administration’s announcement of the formation of a commission to study reforms to the Supreme Court, Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon said:

“It is a major nod to the rising support for Court reform that President Biden felt the need for a high-profile response to the issue. But no one should mistake this commission for the vehicle that will solve the problems posed by the current Supreme Court.”

“A commission made up mostly of academics, that includes far-right voices and is not tasked with making formal recommendations, is unlikely to meaningfully advance the ball on Court reform. We plan to spend the coming months organizing additional support at the grassroots level and working with members of Congress who already understand the urgency here to file legislation without waiting for this commission’s report.

“We have never expected President Biden’s support to be a leading indicator of the traction we are gaining for the idea of Court expansion. As with filibuster reform, support from party leadership will follow sustained pressure from the grassroots and the facts on the ground– in this case, additional bad rulings by the Republican-appointed justices. ”

On April 17th at 3pm, Demand Justice will host a national organizing call featuring Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Mondaire Jones to educate grassroots supporters about how to pressure their members of Congress to support adding seats to the Court.
