DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON CONFIRMATION HEARING FOR JUDGE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON AND CANDACE JACKSON-AKIWUMI

WASHINGTON, DC—Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon released the following statement following the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and Candace Jackson-Akiwumi:

“With their phenomenal testimony, these two lawyers showed why public defenders are so sorely needed on the federal courts. Judge Jackson’s unassailable performance confirmed why she is top of mind when people speculate about future Supreme Court nominees. We were pleased that Democratic senators spoke favorably about the need for more professional diversity on the bench, and we look forward to them following through on those comments by recommending public defenders and civil rights lawyers to the White House for the district court vacancies in their states.”

“Republican senators’ repeated attacks on Demand Justice show they couldn’t seriously criticize the records of these two highly-qualified nominees, so they went after our organization instead. If Republicans feel this threatened by our work to restore balance to our court system, we must be doing something right.”
