DEMAND JUSTICE STATEMENT ON BIDEN JUDICIAL NOMINEES

WASHINGTON, DC— Following news that President Biden will nominate his seventh round of judicial nominees, Demand Justice Chief Counsel Christopher Kang issued the following statement:

“President Biden continues to show that rebalancing the federal courts is one of his top priorities. By nominating lawyers with experience standing up for civil rights, consumers, and people accused of crimes, the administration is building on its clear commitment to improving professional diversity on a bench dominated by former prosecutors and corporate lawyers.”

This batch of nominees includes three lawyers with experience serving in legal civil rights organizations: Judge Holly Thomas at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and David Urias and Judge Hernán Vera at Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF).

Since Justice Thurgood Marshall’s historic nomination to the bench, only six lawyers with experience at LDF have become federal judges; if confirmed, Judge Thomas would be the seventh. Only two lawyers with experience at MALDEF have ever become federal judges; if confirmed, Urias and Judge Vera would double that number.
