Washington, DC– This afternoon, the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 emergency ruling allowing the Trump administration to block $65 million in teacher development grants.
As Justice Jackson wrote in her dissent, which was joined by Justice Sotomayor, “Children, pets, and magicians might find pleasure in the clever use of such shiny-object tactics. But a court of law should not be so easily distracted. Yet, here we are.”
In response, Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:
“The Court’s actions are disappointing, harming teachers and schoolchildren, and in furtherance of Trump’s radical agenda. There are many more emergency decisions to come, and we should all be concerned by rulings from this Court that serve primarily to give the administration an “early win,” as Justice Jackson says. This decision comes at the expense of everyday Americans, as the stock market tumbles and our democracy is in peril.”
