Washington, DC–Today Demand Justice released a new quiz testing the user’s knowledge of recent Supreme Court ethics scandals. Released one week out from the election, the quiz is an educational tool designed to draw attention to the depth of the scandals plaguing the court as a way to underscore the need for elected representatives who will check the judiciary and restore its legitimacy. Reporting just last week revealed more details about the close relationship between Justice Alito, his wife Martha-Ann, and Bavarian Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis–who has known connections to far-right politics in both Europe and the United States.
Over the past few years the Supreme Court has been plagued by ethics scandals that have revealed that the MAGA justices’ true loyalties do not lay with the American people. Even while the Court was out of session over the summer, the ethics scandals did not stop:
- In August it was revealed that Justice Thomas failed to report private jet travel paid for by Harlan Crow between New Zealand and Hawaii in 2010.
- In September Chief Justice John Roberts allegedly went to great–and sometimes unusual–lengths to produce outcomes in cases that benefited Donald Trump.
- Also in September, ProPublica released new emails from Ginni Thomas to the head of the First Liberty Institute in which she praised the organization’s opposition to Supreme Court reforms, saying “YOU GUYS HAVE FILLED THE SAILS OF MANY JUDGES.”
The Supreme Court is in dire need of ethics reform, and Congress must act to ensure our nation’s highest Court is working for all people, not just the wealthy and powerful. Public trust in the Supreme Court has plummeted in recent years and ethics scandals surrounding the justices have raised concerning questions about whether the Court serves the American people, or far-right political interests.
