Demand Justice, MoveOn Present Reps. Omar and Bowman with 1.2 Million Signatures Calling for Justice Thomas’ Impeachment

Speakers addressed the need for Thomas to be held accountable and for structural reforms to the Supreme Court
WASHINGTON, DC— On Thursday, representatives from Demand Justice and MoveOn presented Reps. Ilhan Omar and Jamaal Bowman with a petition signed by 1.2 million Americans calling for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached.
Speaking on the steps of the Supreme Court, Demand Justice, MoveOn, and Reps. Omar and Bowman called on Congress to impeach Thomas, and also to act on structural reforms to restore balance, such as adding seats to the Court.
“Clarence Thomas for the past three decades worked in tandem with his wife from the bench to decide cases that were in lockstep with his wife’s political pursuits,” said Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5). “There’s no way Clarence Thomas can be seen as a neutral jurist and should not decide cases while his wife actively worked to overturn the election. Our failure to hold him accountable will further delegitimize the Court and will embolden other justices to act in lockstep with his actions. Clarence Thomas is too compromised to sit on the Court and that’s why I was the first Member of Congress to call for his impeachment.”
“We cannot let Justice Clarence Thomas get away with his blatant violation of both the Constitution and his oath of office,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman Ed.D (NY-16). “I want to thank MoveOn for working tirelessly to collect over 1.2 million signatures calling to impeach Justice Clarence Thomas and delivering them to myself and Congresswoman Omar today. Justice Thomas’ deep connection to the insurrection is not the only violation of ethics he has committed, but just the most recent of a long history of wrongdoings. Now, with Ginni Thomas’ involvement with the insurrection, Justice Thomas’ failure to recuse himself from any cases regarding January 6th, and his craving to overturn every last one of our civil rights, we’re at a breaking point. We will not let him and the illegitimate Supreme Court win and we will not back down. We know what we have to do: expand the court, set term limits, set age limits, and impeach Justice Clarence Thomas.”
“What Clarence Thomas did is a symptom of a broken system. Our Supreme Court is broken,” said Demand Justice Senior Advisor for Engagement and outreach Tamara Brummer. “We deserve justices who have integrity, who have respect for the Constitution, and who have respect for the people they represent. We must add seats to the Court to rebalance the Court. We impeach Thomas, we must reform the broken Court on which he sat.”
“The political operatives who wear robes and call themselves judges are simply accomplishing through the courts what extremist Republicans have failed to do at the ballot box,” said Rahna Epting, Executive Director of MoveOn. “We are at the Supreme Court today because the American public has had enough. We are here today because more than 1.2 MILLION people are demanding accountability. We are here today because the wife of a justice of this institution not only participated in, but helped plan and lead, a deadly coup attempt against this nation.”
