Washington, DC – Demand Justice expanded its “Justice Under Siege” campaign today with a new tracker documenting attacks by President Trump and his allies against the rule of law and our system of justice. These include over 1,700 actions from the administration itself, MAGA Republicans in Congress, the Supreme Court, and right-wing influencers.
As part of this campaign, Demand Justice is running ads in the Washington Post today highlighting new polling from Senate battleground states showing the American people across the political spectrum see President Trump and his allies’s attacks on the rule of law for what they are – a clear abuse of power that threatens the rights of everyday people.
The ad campaign and tracker come after a series of decisions from the Supreme Court that, as legal experts have noted, are likely to only invite more instances of court defiance that will harm people across the country.
The same polling also demonstrates the significant concern among voters that Trump’s judicial nominees will be selected for loyalty to him, not the law.
As the full Senate is poised to begin consideration of Trump’s first slate of judicial nominees, it is clear that Americans’ opposition to attacks on the rule of law and loyalist judicial nominees go hand-in-hand.
Strong majorities polled also say it’s important that judges hold officials accountable for breaking the law, and are concerned that Trump ignoring court rulings could allow the government to further violate their own rights.
Demand Justice Interim Executive Director Maggie Jo Buchanan issued the following statement:
“For months, our ‘Justice Under Siege’ campaign has exposed and pushed back against President Trump’s blatant abuses of power as he takes a wrecking ball to the rule of law and our system of checks and balances.
“In less than six months, we’ve seen the consequences of a president placing himself above the law and undermining the courts at every turn. With a judiciary unable–-and at times, unwilling–to rein him in, Trump and his MAGA allies have had free rein to gut healthcare, limit reproductive freedoms, dismantle environmental protections, and make us all less safe.
The American people know our justice system is under siege. We must do everything possible to expose these attacks—-and commit to the work that is clearly needed to ensure a stronger, more fair court system overall.”
