Washington, DC – President Biden delivered a speech this afternoon on his administration’s successful efforts to confirm 235 justices to the bench, bringing a much-needed update to the federal judiciary. In response, Demand Justice Managing Director Maggie Jo Buchanan said the following:
“President Biden, his administration and the outgoing Senate majority should be proud of what they did, especially during the lame duck, to build a stronger, better, more demographically and professionally diverse judiciary. We saw dozens of judges from underrepresented backgrounds like public defense, civil rights litigation, and labor law confirmed to the bench thanks to President Biden’s commitment.
“As we look ahead to the kinds of far-right loyalists Donald Trump plans to appoint, the importance of these fair minded, Biden judges becomes even more apparent. They will serve as a critical line of defense against the extreme and dangerous policies proposed by Project 2025. President Biden’s nominees will work to fairly interpret the law to protect our rights and freedoms for years to come.”
President Biden’s judicial nominees have been majority women and people of color, with a third of them being women of color. In Trump’s first term, only 16 percent of his judicial nominees were people of color and only 24 percent were women.
