Demand Justice Applauds Senate Democrats For Fighting Trump Administration’s Intimidation Of The Judiciary

As Trump, Musk, and MAGA Republicans Try to Bend Judiciary to Their Will, Democrats Stand Up for Constitutional Balance of Powers

Washington, DC — Today, Democrats in the U.S. Senate stood up and fought back against President Trump, Elon Musk, and their MAGA allies’ sustained, coordinated campaign of intimidation against the federal judiciary, speaking on the Senate floor to condemn these attacks on our judicial branch. 

After holding Republicans accountable for unleashing a wave of attacks on independent jurists who have ruled against the Trump administration’s lawless and unconstitutional acts, Senator Durbin attempted to pass a resolution affirming the critical importance of checks and balances in our government and that the executive branch must comply with all federal court rulings. But Trump’s MAGA Republicans, led by Senator Grassley, blocked the resolution.

In response, Demand Justice Managing Director Maggie Jo Buchanan released the following statement:  

“Whether it’s with threats online or baseless impeachment resolutions in Congress, President Trump, Elon Musk, and their MAGA supporters in Congress want to bend the federal courts to their will in order to ram through their extreme and unpopular agenda to gut our healthcare, decimate our rights, and cut access to critical services that everyday Americans rely on.

“Demand Justice commends Sen. Durbin and other Senate Judiciary Committee members for taking a stand and fighting back against this administration’s blatant power grab, which goes against the very core of our democracy. A strong judiciary and balanced courts are crucial for the health and survival of our nation, as is respect for the rule of law and the constitutional balance of powers.”

BACKGROUND:

  • Elon Musk has issued targeted threats against “evil” judges online.
  • House Republicans have introduced multiple articles of impeachment against District Court judges who have simply issued rulings that run counter to their agenda to mold the judiciary into a program-cutting, civil rights-eliminating machine.
