WASHINGTON, DC— A coalition of more than 50 organizations called on the House to pass the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act of 2022, highlighting the need for dramatic ethics reform in the wake of revelations about Ginni Thomas’s efforts to overthrow the election.

In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the organizations write: “While the recent revelations regarding Justice Thomas’s conflicts of interest are jaw-dropping, they are only the latest in a long list of examples of the Court failing to enforce basic standards of judicial ethics. … It is well past time for the justices to be held accountable, and this legislation will show the American people that the House is serious about common sense judiciary reforms. We implore the House of Representatives to swiftly pass the SCERT Act in order to bring accountability and transparency to a Court that has evaded it for far too long.”

The letter is signed by organizations including: Alliance for Justice, American Atheists, American Federation of Teachers, American Humanist Association, Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, Blue Future, Blue Wave Postcard Movement, Brennan Center for Justice, Cause Communications, CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) Clean Water Action, Coalition of Labor Union Women, Demand Justice, DemCast USA, Demos, End Citizens United / Let America Vote Action Fund, Fix Democracy First, FORGE, Inc., Freedom From Religion Foundation, Greenpeace USA, Hispanic Federation, Indivisible, League of Conservation Voters, Lights for Liberty, March On, MoveOn, Muslim Public Affairs Council, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Council of Jewish Women, National Employment Lawyers Association, National Organization for Women, NELP Action, P Street/Progressive Change Campaign Committee People’s Parity Project, Rooted in Resistance, Secular Coalition for America, Secure Elections Network, Stand Up America, Take Back the Court Action Fund, True North Research, Union of Concerned Scientists, URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, Walking to Fix Our Democracy, and Women’s March.
